Chandragiri Hill, located on the south-west of Kathmandu Valley, is the second highest hill after Pulchowki at 2,551 metres above sea level. With a 180 degree vista of the mountains, an astounding view of the concrete jungle that is Kathmandu Valley to the north, and the strikingly contrasting Makwanpur district to the south, Chandragiri Hill has been a popular hiking spot for hikers around the valley. And with the recent opening of the Chandragiri Cable Car, tourists and locals alike now have the option of enjoying all this beauty without having to take the uphill hike.
What makes the ride worthwhile
The ride from the bottom station to the hill top gives you picturesque views of the Kathmandu Valley and the gorgeous Makwanpur beyond. The ride is a bit scary for those who have a fear of heights but the lust landscape more than makes up for it. Fresh, crisp air – a warm change from what we are accustomed to in Kathmandu – greets you as you step out the cable car, and you forget that you are so near the Valley. It is the perfect escape for some much-needed refreshment from the humdrum of city life. But the weather is unpredictable, and it is advised to carry an umbrella and a jacket in the monsoons.
There are many attractions that will keep you busy as well. If you are a religious person, then a visit to the Bhaleshwor Temple, where Lord Shiva is worshipped, is a must. It is believed that your wishes will come true if you pray in the Bhaleshwor Temple. According to history, it is said that King Prithvi Narayan Shah had also visited the temple before conquering Kathmandu during his campaign of unification. The temple is now renovated with a beautiful ‘aakhi jhyal’ in each wall giving it a religious and traditional touch.
There is also a viewing deck which will give you a spectacular bird’s eye view of the Kathmandu Valley and a panoramic view of the Manaslu, Ganesh, Langtang and Everest. A fine dining restaurant is also present at the top of the hill, where one can relish Continental and Nepali food while enjoying the beautiful surrounding landscape. The restaurant also has a bar and some wonderful coffee to keep conversations company.
You can also indulge into other attractions such as enjoy short plays at the amphitheatre or enjoy some quality time with your kids in the playground. They also have a multi-purpose conference hall where one can arrange different programmes. Plans of operating a boutique hotel, zip-flying and horse riding are also underway. With a little something for everyone, a visit to Chandragiri Hill definitely tops the list of things of fun things you can do both in the weekends and weekdays.
